What Is General Liability Insurance?

General liability insurance is the foundational coverage for virtually every business — regardless of industry, size, or structure. It protects your business from the financial consequences of claims that your operations, products, or services caused bodily injury or property damage to a third party, as well as certain advertising-related claims. If you own or operate a business, general liability insurance is not optional — it is the essential starting point of a responsible commercial insurance program.

GLS Insurance provides general liability insurance for businesses across all 17 states in our licensed territory. As an independent agency, we work with multiple carriers to find the right combination of coverage, limits, and pricing for your specific business.

What Does General Liability Insurance Cover?

Bodily Injury Liability

If a customer, vendor, contractor, or other third party is injured at your place of business or as a result of your operations, general liability covers their medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering damages, and your legal defense costs. Common examples: a customer slips and falls in your retail store; a visitor trips over equipment at your job site; a delivery driver is injured on your business premises.

Property Damage Liability

If your business operations, employees, or products damage property belonging to someone else, general liability covers the cost of repair or replacement and your legal defense. Common examples: a contractor accidentally damages a client’s flooring while performing work; a cleaning company breaks a client’s furniture; a landscaper’s equipment damages an irrigation system.

Personal and Advertising Injury

Covers claims of libel, slander, copyright infringement, and other advertising-related claims against your business. If a competitor claims your advertising copied their slogan or your business is accused of making defamatory statements about another party, this coverage responds.

Products and Completed Operations

Covers claims arising from products you sell or work you have completed. If a product you manufactured injures someone after it leaves your business, or if work you performed causes property damage after the job is done, this coverage responds. Completed operations coverage is especially critical for contractors and service businesses.

What General Liability Does NOT Cover

  • Your own property — Commercial property insurance covers your building and business personal property.

  • Your employees’ injuries — Workers’ compensation covers employee workplace injuries.

  • Your professional mistakes — Professional liability (E&O) covers errors in professional services.

  • Your vehicles — Commercial auto covers business vehicles.

  • Intentional acts — Claims arising from intentional wrongdoing are excluded.

  • Pollution — Most GL policies contain pollution exclusions; contractor’s pollution liability fills this gap.

General Liability Limits: How Much Do You Need?

General liability policies are typically written with two key limits: a per-occurrence limit (the maximum paid for a single claim) and an aggregate limit (the maximum paid for all claims during the policy period). The most common starting point for small businesses is vc_column_text million per occurrence / fce_id=”fce_69b9a9256f15f” million aggregate. Many commercial clients, landlords, and general contractors require vc_column_text– fce_id=”fce_69b9a9256f15f” million in per-occurrence limits as a condition of doing business.

Higher-risk businesses, larger operations, and those with contractual requirements may need higher primary limits or a commercial umbrella policy to supplement their general liability coverage. GLS Insurance reviews your contracts and risk profile to recommend appropriate limits.

General Liability Across 17 States

General liability insurance is not regulated as heavily as workers’ compensation, but rates and market availability vary across our 17-state territory. Businesses in states with more active litigation environments — Texas, Florida, Illinois, and North Carolina — may find that carriers are more selective and pricing is higher for certain classes. GLS Insurance’s market access across multiple carriers helps businesses in every state find competitive general liability coverage.

General Liability Insurance FAQ

General liability is not typically required by state law the way workers’ compensation is. However, it is effectively mandatory for most businesses because landlords require it as a condition of a commercial lease, general contractors require it from subcontractors, commercial clients require it before awarding contracts, and operating without it exposes your business to catastrophic uncovered claims.

General liability covers physical risks — bodily injury and property damage from your operations. Professional liability (also called E&O or malpractice) covers claims arising from your professional services or advice — errors, omissions, and professional negligence. Businesses that provide professional services or advice need both.

An additional insured endorsement extends your general liability coverage to cover another party — typically your client or property owner — for claims arising from your operations. This is standard practice in commercial contracting, and GLS Insurance adds additional insured endorsements and issues certificates of insurance quickly when needed for new contracts.

Premiums vary widely by industry, annual revenue, claims history, location, and coverage limits. A small professional office might pay $400–$800 per year. A contractor or trade business pays more. A restaurant or bar pays more than a professional office. GLS Insurance shops multiple carriers to find the most competitive rate for your business class.
